Can Government Recruit World Class Digital Talent?

Linda Ross, Specialist Talent Acquisition & Recruitment, and Michael Connolly, Head of Digital Engagement, Department for Work and Pensions

  • How social purpose provides an edge in an ultra-competitive recruitment market
  • Mobilising the organisation to sell itself
  • Building a seamless in-house recruitment and marketing team

Linda has worked for DWP and its various predecessors since 1985. The first half of that was spent in Operations, but put on a hard hat and boots in 2002 as JCP Implementation Manager for Hampshire and the IOW. In 2003 she joined HR which she soon recognised was definitely her career anchor. She has enjoyed a number of different HRBP's roles in both operations and corporate centre across a wide range of interesting senior stakeholders. This has often involved supporting the business through various changes including organisational redesign in Op's and the creation of Business Transformation Group. She has enjoyed all the roles for different reasons but the golden thread is always about making a difference and supporting individuals to grow and develop. For the last 3 years she has led the Specialist Talent, Acquisition and Recruitment Team, which includes SCS recruitment. Our main purpose is to bring specialist talent into DWP, our current focus on digital. Outside of work her main interests are travel, supporting a charity in Sri Lanka and watching sport: utopia being when you can combine all three!!

Michael is Head of Digital Engagement at DWP, a role spanning people engagement, internal communications, external marketing, content design, social media strategy and incident management. He has worked in government communications since 2004, delivering campaigns encouraging people to - among other things - fit smoke alarms, save for retirement and employ ex-offenders. He worked in the media before joining the Civil Service, including five years as an advertising exec at the Guardian.

Innovation Spotlight: TheJobPost and Public Service People Managers Association (PPMA)

Next generation supply chain
The way employers work with recruitment agencies is radically changing.  The era of static Preferred Supplier Lists (PSL’s) is over. Talent acquisition teams want to focus on direct recruitment and only use recruitment agencies for specialist roles. This means building agile agency supply chains where they can find and contract with the best agency consultants quickly and easily. We will explore how innovative talent acquisition teams are leveraging platforms and data to build, engage and manage their high-performing recruitment agency supply chain.
Howard Flint, Advisor, TheJobPost

Since moving to the Cabinet Office 2 years ago, Stuart has been responsible for setting up an internal search team for Non Executive Public Appointments, and now runs a team of staff delivering Director & Director General recruitment campaigns across the Civil Service.

Widen The Talent Pool, Hire for Potential

Roger PhilbyFounder, The Chemistry Group

  • Many believe that removing bias at the point of selection solves the diversity problem - but does it?
  • If diversity is not a selection problem, where can we look to solve it?
  • Join us as we investigate whether diversity is, in fact, an attraction problem, and expose how widening the talent pool and hiring for potential can improve your organisation's diversity

Roger Philby has spent the past twenty-five years dedicated to creating brilliant careers, to create brilliant organisations. Today, valuable talent is being wasted due to poor decisions, based on uninformed, inconsistent and biased information. As a result, talent is not being accurately identified and not being connected to the right opportunity; limiting the potential of people and holding back organisations. Roger is obsessed with putting this right. Roger has created innovative and award-winning approaches to how some of the world’s largest companies recruit and develop their workforces, including Accenture, Experian, the NHS, SAP and House of Fraser. He was also part of “the biggest turnaround in UK business history”, running recruitment for Energis Communications.
